About IRIS

The School for Advanced Studies in the Arts and Humanities (SASAH)

IRIS is a digital journal created by students in SASAH (the School for Advanced Studies in the Arts and Humanities) at Western University. Our academic endeavours encourage us to challenge and reframe our views of the world beyond, as we continue to refine the ways in which we communicate with it. A cooperative environment and sense of community is natural to SASAH and it is our hope that this journal will provide a digital space for discussion and connection, where students can engage with the world and each other so we can maintain and continue to build a community within our program.

The name IRIS reflects and encapsulates the energy and intentions of this project. According to Greek mythology, Iris was the Goddess of the rainbow and the messenger of the Gods. She facilitated connection between people and was often connected to light and new endeavours. She captures the spirit of this journal perfectly, in that we are hoping to create a new space for connection as well as shed light on current matters on the basis of the personal reflective pieces showcased on the site. Additionally, it is said that the Iris flower represents wisdom, hope, and trust, all of which we hope to welcome and represent in this digital space.
